Copy work

Honey has started copying the book, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”  She enjoys drawing her own pictures more than the writing, but I think that she has learned how to spell fish, LOL.   I have read that copywork can really help kids who struggle with reading. Getting the print into your head and then back onto paper requires that you really think about what you are doing.  It also seems better to have copywork be something that is easy to read, because spelling lags behind reading.  Each word needs to be remembered long enough to write it.  In Honey’s case, she is only remembering each letter long enough to write it.  I hope that this improves over the year. I bet that it will take the whole year to copy the book, but I also bet that she will learn a lot from it.

Dearie is going to copy Joshua chapter 1.  She hates handwriting, so this will be a challenge for her.  She will use her International Children’s Version Bible.  The reading level is really easy for her, so this will fit the criteria that the copywork needs to be material that is “easy.”   Since she will be doing Bible Bowl later this year, I don’t know if she will continue to do copywork all year or not, but I’m sure that it would be good for her.

I’m not sure what to have Kiddo copy.  Maybe a Dick and Jane book, or maybe just her name and address.  She really is not into writing much yet.
